Ruhani Gazalen is a digital archive and cultural platform dedicated to the preservation and celebration of Urdu ghazals and Indian poetic traditions. Founded in the heart of Delhi, we bridge centuries of literary heritage with modern storytelling.
From the mystical verses of Mirza Ghalib and Mir Taqi Mir to contemporary voices reimagining the form, we curate, translate, and present ghazals that speak to the soul — across languages, borders, and generations.
A selection of soul-stirring couplets from the masters of Urdu poetry, presented in original Urdu, transliteration, and English translation.
"When nothing existed, God did. If nothing were to exist, God would. Existence has drowned me. What would I be if I did not exist?"
— Mirza Ghalib
"Dil-e-naadaan tujhe hua kya hai
Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai"
"O naive heart, what has befallen you? What, after all, is the cure for this pain?"
— Mir Taqi Mir
"Yeh jo halqa-e-zanjeer mein hain gardanen unki
Kabhi yeh bhi be-talwar kya nahin hoti"
"Those necks that now rest in the circle of chains — were they never without a sword?"
— Faiz Ahmed Faiz
"Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dam nikle
Bahut nikle mere armaan lekin phir bhi kam nikle"
"Thousands of desires, each worth dying for. Many of my wishes were fulfilled, yet they still felt too few."
— Mirza Ghalib
"Ek nukta-e-ghazal mein hai umr bhar ka maza
Jo lutf sunaane mein hai woh lutf sunaane mein nahin"
"In a single point of a ghazal lies the pleasure of a lifetime. The joy of listening is not the same as the joy of speaking."
— Jigar Moradabadi
"Tere waade pe jiye hum toh yeh jaan jhooth jaana
"If I lived on your promise, know this was a lie — for had I truly believed, I would have died of joy."
— Mirza Ghalib
